This encoder also has a push-button built into it so you can press onto the knob to close a separate switch. One side has a 3 pin connector (ground and two coding pins) and the other side has two pins for a normally-open switch.Rotary encoders are useful as rotation sensors or selectors and look similar to potentiometers. However they are not like potentiometers at all, so it's important to realize the difference! These rotary encoders rotate all the way around continuously, and are divided up into 24 'segments'. Each segment has a click-y feeling to it, and each movement clockwise or counter-clockwise causes the two switches to open and close. There is no way to know what the current 'position' is - instead you would use a microcontroller to count how many 'clicks' left or right it has been turned. If you need to detect rotational 'position' a potentiometer would be a better choice...

This Real Time Clock (RTC) is the most precise you can get in a small, low power package.Most RTCs use an external 32kHz timing crystal that is used to keep time with low current draw. And that's all well and good, but those crystals have slight drift, particularly when the temperature changes (the temperature changes the oscillation frequency very very very slightly but it does add up!) This RTC is in a beefy package because the crystal is inside the chip! And right next to the integrated crystal is a temperature sensor. That sensor compensates for the frequency changes by adding or removing clock ticks so that the timekeeping stays on schedule.This is the finest RTC you can get, and now we have it in a compact, breadboard-friendly breakout. With a coin cell plugged into the back, you can get years of precision timekeeping, even when main power is lost. Great for datalogging and clocks, or anything where you need to really know the time.Comes as a fully assembled and tested breakout plus a small piece of header. And we agreed, so we decided to get some in our Materials section since its so cool. Z-axis tape is made by 3M, and is used to bond two conductive surfaces together and allow a small (we'd say keep it under 100mA) current to flow through the tape. But here's the cool part: its only conductive across the thickness of the tape itself, not along the length or width . Mindblowing, right? We took a macro shot of the tape above so you can see how it works. Its a regular adhesive tape with little chunks of conductive material every 0.1mm or so. The adhesive does the bonding, the little chunks do the conducting. This tape goes great with our other interesting conductive materials, such as copper tape, ITO glass or plastic, conductive inks, etc. For a quick fun project we put some tape on a Gemma and Neopixels: remove the white cover first, then stick the circuit board onto the brown paper+tape. Cut out the shape around the circuit board, then carefully peel off the brown paper. Repeat for the neopixels. Make traces on a piece of paper and stick the Gemma and Neopixels down: ta-dah, paper circuit! Each order comes with a strip of 2 x 6 tape. Its big enough you can use it for a bunch of projects. Use the USB In-Line Voltage and Current Meter to measure the working voltage and current output for any USB port and project. This blue plastic dongle plugs between a USB device, and passes the data lines through. There's a 0.025 ohm resistor in line with the power pin that is used to measure current draw. This voltage meter has an OLED display that shows off voltage, watts, amps, and mAH and instantly reads the numbers out for testing devices such as chargers, cables, and cell phones.  There's a button on the back that allows you to flip the display 180° for easier reading. You can use this device from 3.7-13VDC input voltage (although most USB devices tend to hover around 4.75 to 5.25) and up to 3A of current.  It's a very handy tool for testing USB devices above 7VDC, checking load levels and debugging battery chargers and boost converters. Well, if you had this UV Index sensor connected up to an Arduino you could have said According to this calibrated SI1145 sensor from SiLabs, the UV index right now is 4.5 which means I do not need more sunscreen and she would have been so impressed with your project that you could have spent more time splashing around. The SI1145 is a new sensor from SiLabs with a calibrated light sensing algorithm that can calculate UV Index. It doesn't contain an actual UV sensing element, instead it approximates it based on visible & IR light from the sun. We took this outside a couple days and compared the calculated UV index with the news-reported index and found it was very accurate! It's a digital sensor that works over I2C so just about any microcontroller can use it. The sensor also has individual visible and IR sensing elements so you can measure just about any kind of light - we only wrote our library to printout the 'counts' rather than the calculate the exact values of IR and Visible light so if you need precision Lux measurement check out the TSL2561. If you're feeling really advanced, you can connect up an IR LED to the LED pin and use the basic proximity sensor capability that is in the SI1145 as well. We wrapped this nice little sensor up on a PCB with level shifting and regulation circuitry so you can safely use it with 3 or 5V microcontrollers. Seriously, it could not get more easy.If you want to add an On/Off switch, we also made that really easy. The two 0.1 holes with a box around them are the battery output line. Carefully cut the trace between them with a hobby knife and replace with two wires from a switch like this slide switch , or this pushbutton one , for example.
